Tension is rising in South Africa as Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema is set to be sentenced on Wednesday at the East London Magistrate’s Court over firearm-related offences.
Malema was found guilty by Magistrate Twanet Olivier on charges including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as discharging a firearm in a built-up area, thereby putting lives at risk.
Prosecutors are seeking a 15-year direct prison sentence. However, Malema has vowed to challenge any ruling, stating he is prepared to take the matter to the highest court if necessary.
The conviction stems from a 2018 incident at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane, where Malema was seen in a widely circulated video firing a weapon during the EFF’s fifth anniversary celebrations. The case was initiated by lobby group AfriForum.
During pre-sentencing proceedings earlier this year, a social worker testified in Malema’s defence, highlighting his political influence and his role as a provider to many dependents. Despite this, the state has maintained its call for a lengthy prison term.
Speaking at a media briefing, Malema insisted he is ready to appeal immediately if sentenced. He outlined plans to engage legal teams in both Bisho and East London to fast-track the appeal process.
AfriForum spokesperson Jacques Broodryk said the group is satisfied with how the case has been handled so far and hopes for a fair and firm sentence. He noted that the ruling underscores that no individual, regardless of political standing, is above the law in South Africa.
Meanwhile, large numbers of EFF supporters have gathered in East London, holding vigils and demonstrating solidarity with their leader ahead of the sentencing.
The court’s decision is expected to draw significant national attention as it could have major political and legal implications.
