Presidency Pushes Back on Atiku, Says Tinubu Will Serve Full Two Terms

The Presidency has dismissed recent remarks by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Nigeria’s power rotation, insisting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will complete a full eight-year tenure in office.

Atiku had raised concerns over the distribution of political power between the North and South, suggesting that the arrangement has not been balanced over the years. His comments have reignited discussions around zoning and equity as political actors begin to look ahead to the 2027 elections.

Responding to the claims, presidential officials described the argument as inaccurate and politically driven. They maintained that the current administration emerged under an understanding that power would remain in the South for two terms, following the North’s eight-year hold on the presidency.

According to the Presidency, altering that expectation midway would go against established political conventions and could create unnecessary tension within the country’s democratic framework.

The government further accused Atiku of attempting to reshape the narrative for personal political gain, stressing that leadership agreements should not be revisited based on shifting interests.

The development signals rising political friction between the ruling party and opposition figures, as early maneuvering for the next presidential race continues to gather momentum.
