Asuquo Dominates Men’s 400m as MTN Champs Finale Delivers Thrilling Finishes

Ezekiel Asuquo emerged as the standout performer in the men’s 400 metres at the MTN CHAMPS grand finale, powering to a convincing victory at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.

Competing for Team MTN, Asuquo controlled the race from start to finish, crossing the line in 46.60 seconds to claim gold. He finished ahead of Benin Republic’s Jules Waiga, who recorded 47.23 seconds, while Wisdom Alexander secured the bronze medal in 47.51 seconds.

The women’s 400m title went to Miracle Uwem Donald, who also delivered a strong performance, setting a personal best of 54.07 seconds to take first place. She was followed by Joy Ayomide and Adepoju Adedoyin, who completed the podium.

In the junior categories, David Dominion Udoh narrowly retained his title in a tightly contested men’s 400m final, edging Ghana’s Kazali Iddrisu with a lifetime best of 46.62 seconds. On the women’s side, Treasure Okereke claimed gold in 53.30 seconds.

The competition also featured impressive performances in the 200m heats, where Ghana’s Marizuk Shaibu led the senior men’s qualifiers, while Taofikat Sulaimon topped the senior women’s category.

Field events saw African bronze medallist Samuel Kure win the men’s javelin with a throw of 79.39 metres, while Gowon Oghenerunor secured gold in the junior men’s long jump with a leap of 7.22 metres.

The finale showcased rising athletic talent across West Africa, with athletes delivering personal bests and closely fought finishes across multiple events.
