Concerned by the spike in traffic-related incidents, the Abia State council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has called for immediate steps to address worsening road safety conditions.
The group noted that accidents have become increasingly common on several busy roads, raising fears among residents and daily commuters. It stressed that the situation reflects deeper issues tied to weak enforcement of traffic laws and risky behavior by some drivers.
In its remarks, the union pointed to speeding, impatience behind the wheel, and general neglect of road safety rules as major factors fueling the trend. It warned that without swift intervention, the state could witness a further rise in casualties.
To tackle the problem, the journalists urged law enforcement agencies to step up patrols and ensure stricter compliance with driving regulations. They also appealed to the government to prioritize road maintenance and install safety features that can help prevent accidents.
The NUJ further emphasized the need for continuous public sensitization, encouraging road users to adopt safer habits and take personal responsibility for reducing crashes across the state.
