Pressure Mounts on INEC Boss as Advocacy Group Seeks Probe, Resignation

Calls for accountability within Nigeria’s electoral system have intensified, with a civil society group urging the head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to step down over allegations of partisanship.

The organisation, in a strongly worded statement, expressed concern that claims linking the commission’s chairman to political interests could undermine the credibility of elections if left unaddressed. It stressed that public confidence in the electoral process depends heavily on the perceived neutrality of those in charge.

Beyond demanding his resignation, the group called for an independent forensic review of the allegations, arguing that a thorough investigation is necessary to either confirm or dismiss the claims.

While officials within the electoral body have rejected the accusations, insisting there is no evidence of bias, the group maintained that the issue should not be dismissed without proper scrutiny.

According to the organisation, addressing the controversy transparently is crucial, especially as the country prepares for future electoral cycles. It warned that unresolved doubts about the commission’s leadership could weaken trust in democratic institutions.

The group concluded by urging authorities to act in the interest of fairness and accountability, noting that safeguarding electoral integrity remains essential to Nigeria’s democratic stability.
