EFCC Alerts Nigerians to Fraudsters Posing as Officials in Fake Raids

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has alerted members of the public about the increasing cases of criminals disguising themselves as its personnel to carry out unlawful activities in different parts of the country.

The agency said these individuals often present themselves as EFCC officers, sometimes using fake badges or uniforms, to conduct illegal “operations” targeted at unsuspecting citizens.

According to the commission, the impostors usually accuse their victims of financial offences without proper investigation and proceed to intimidate them in order to extort money or confiscate personal belongings. Some have also been reported to set up fake detention environments to make their scams appear genuine.

In other instances, the fraudsters reportedly stop people in public spaces, particularly motorists, and falsely claim to be on official duty while demanding payments under duress.

The EFCC urged Nigerians to remain alert and always confirm the identity of anyone claiming to represent the agency, stressing that its legitimate officers operate with verifiable identification and due process.

It also assured that efforts are ongoing to track down and prosecute those behind the impersonation schemes.
