Editors Blast Broadcast Regulator Over Alleged Move to Curb Media Freedom

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has strongly criticised the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) over what it described as a planned clampdown on broadcast journalists and presenters in the country.

The editors expressed concern over reports that the regulator intends to sanction broadcasters for allegedly airing personal opinions as facts or handling interview guests in a confrontational manner. They warned that such a move could undermine press independence and weaken democratic accountability.

In a statement signed by its leadership, the Guild said the proposed action amounted to an attack on journalism, arguing that it risks creating fear within newsrooms and encouraging self-censorship among media practitioners.

While acknowledging the NBC’s responsibility to uphold professional broadcasting standards, the editors argued that the guidelines being enforced were too broad and unclear, leaving room for misinterpretation or selective enforcement against journalists.

They further stressed that journalists must retain the freedom to question public officials and report issues without intimidation, especially as the country approaches another election cycle.

The Guild urged regulators to adopt clearer and fairer policies that protect both media ethics and freedom of expression, rather than issuing directives that could be seen as punitive or restrictive.
