A suspect accused of opening fire at a Washington media gala attended by President Donald Trump is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday in the U.S. capital, federal prosecutors have confirmed.
The suspect, who reportedly exchanged gunfire with Secret Service agents without sustaining injuries, will appear before a U.S. District Court judge. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said the charges are expected to include use of a firearm during a violent crime and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.
Following the incident, President Trump said the attack would not affect his administration’s military efforts in Iran, noting that there is no clear evidence linking the shooting to the ongoing conflict. However, he added that investigations are still ongoing to determine the motive, describing the attacker as a “lone wolf.”
In a related development, Trump cancelled a planned diplomatic trip to Pakistan involving his envoys, citing dissatisfaction with Iran’s stance in ongoing peace negotiations after nearly two months of hostilities.
Authorities said the incident occurred around 8:36 p.m. when a lone gunman forced his way through a security checkpoint in a hotel lobby near the event venue. Footage shared by Trump on social media appeared to show the suspect rushing the checkpoint before being subdued by security personnel.
According to Metropolitan Police interim chief Jeffery Carroll, the suspect was armed with multiple weapons. Law enforcement officers engaged and intercepted him during the confrontation.
A Secret Service officer was struck during the exchange but was protected by a vest and is reportedly in stable condition.
The suspect was later taken to a hospital for evaluation. Investigators recovered weapons and ammunition at the scene, while the FBI has begun interviewing witnesses.
Although authorities have not officially released the suspect’s identity, U.S. media reports identify him as a 31-year-old man from California who may have been a guest at the hotel. Officials believe he acted alone.
The incident has raised concerns about security arrangements at the venue, particularly regarding how the suspect was able to enter the hotel with weapons. While screening measures were reportedly in place near the event hall, attendees noted the absence of thorough checks at the hotel’s main entrance.
President Trump initially criticized the venue’s security but later clarified that the ballroom itself remained secure and was not breached during the incident.
Investigations are ongoing.
