The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has defended Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde following criticism from the All Progressives Congress (APC) over his recent reference to “Operation Wetie.”

In a statement issued on Sunday, the PDP dismissed the APC’s reaction as exaggerated, describing it as a sign of a party under pressure. The opposition party explained that Makinde’s remarks were not intended to incite violence but to serve as a warning against political excesses and the suppression of opposition voices.

According to the statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the governor’s reference to the events of the 1960s was meant to highlight the dangers of ignoring historical lessons.

The PDP drew parallels between Nigeria’s past political unrest and the current climate, accusing the APC-led government of fostering conditions that could undermine democratic principles. It stressed that Makinde’s comments should be seen as a cautionary note rather than a threat.

The party also challenged the APC’s criticism, pointing to statements made by members of the ruling party during their time in opposition. It argued that responsibility for any future political instability would rest with the Federal Government, the APC, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Reaffirming its stance, the PDP said it would continue to pursue lawful strategies to resist what it described as attempts to weaken opposition parties and impose a one-party system.

The statement further accused the APC of poor governance and alleged that the ruling party has relied on inducement and intimidation to deal with political opponents.

The PDP concluded by expressing confidence that Nigerians can distinguish between those responsible for rising political tensions and those raising concerns, insisting that criticism would not distract from the issues facing the country.
