Lagos, Nigeria – Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has endorsed his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Kadri Hamzat, as his preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election.

The endorsement came after a closed-door meeting held on Monday at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally declared his intention to run. The meeting brought together members of the State Executive Council and key stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including influential figures within the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) such as Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Solomon.

According to sources, the decision to back Hamzat was unanimous among party stakeholders, signaling growing unity within the APC as discussions around the 2027 transition gather momentum.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described Hamzat as capable and well-prepared for leadership. He highlighted the deputy governor’s experience and deep understanding of the state’s governance structure, saying he possesses the knowledge needed to lead effectively.

The governor also acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s role in shaping their political partnership and supporting their leadership journey.

The endorsement follows closely on the heels of Hamzat’s recent consultations with the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, further fueling political momentum ahead of the 2027 race.
