Gunmen have killed a pastor and three members of his family during a late-night attack on Gako Village in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The victims were identified as Reverend Ayuba Choji, his wife Chundung Ayuba, and their two children, Cyril and Endurance Ayuba.
According to residents, the attackers stormed the community around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, firing shots and causing panic as people fled for safety.
A local resident, Martha Dalyop, said the sudden invasion forced many villagers to abandon their homes. She noted that repeated attacks in the area have created widespread fear, leaving residents unable to sleep peacefully or carry out farming activities.
Confirming the incident, the Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youths Moulder-Association, Rwang Tengwong, said the assault reflects a growing pattern in recent attacks. He explained that gunmen now target rural communities, relaxation spots, and local vigilantes, often operating in coordinated groups.
Tengwong added that while some attackers confront residents, others destroy farmlands or block escape routes, making it difficult for victims to flee or get help.
He also revealed that within the past 48 hours, large portions of farmland in Kassa, Barkin Ladi—including crops such as cabbage, pepper, and maize—have been destroyed, worsening the hardship faced by local farmers.
The attack has heightened tension across Riyom and nearby Barkin Ladi, with residents urging security agencies and government authorities to take stronger action to stop the violence and protect lives and livelihoods.
