WASHINGTON, D.C. – The White House has attributed a recent shooting at a gala correspondents’ dinner attended by President Donald Trump to what it described as increasingly hostile political rhetoric.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, April 27, 2026, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the suspect involved in the incident is expected to appear in court the same day.
Leavitt characterized the attack as the third attempted assassination targeting the president in the past two years, blaming what she called a “left-wing culture of hatred” for escalating tensions.
“The hostility directed at the president and his supporters has led to repeated acts of violence, and it nearly resulted in another tragedy this weekend,” she said.
Addressing reporters at the Brady Press Briefing Room, Leavitt argued that President Trump has been subjected to sustained criticism and harmful labeling, which she claimed has contributed to the current climate.
“Few public figures in recent times have faced this level of threats and violence,” she stated.
She further criticized political opponents and commentators who have used strong language against the president, saying such remarks risk encouraging violent behavior.
The White House also pointed out that comparisons between Trump and historical authoritarian figures have been made by various individuals in the past, including Vice President JD Vance during his earlier opposition to Trump in 2016.
Authorities have not yet released full details of the incident as investigations continue.
