Security operatives in Akwa Ibom State have discovered explosive devices within a custodial centre in Ikot Ekpene, prompting an immediate security response and investigation.

The discovery was made after police received intelligence that led to a thorough search of the facility. During the operation, explosive materials suspected to pose a serious security threat were recovered inside the correctional environment.

The State Police Command confirmed that its Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit was quickly deployed to the scene to safely assess and secure the area, ensuring the devices were properly handled without incident.

Authorities say the swift intervention helped prevent what could have escalated into a dangerous situation within the facility. Investigations are currently ongoing to determine how the items got into the custodial centre and those responsible.

Security agencies have assured the public that efforts are being intensified to strengthen monitoring and prevent similar breaches in correctional facilities across the state.
