Washington, D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday formally welcomed King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the White House, marking the second day of the British monarch’s historic state visit.
The ceremonial reception, held on the South Lawn, comes at a crucial moment for UK–U.S. relations, with the British government hoping the visit will help ease tensions over ongoing trade and security disagreements.
In his remarks, President Trump struck a lighthearted tone, sharing a personal anecdote about his late mother, whom he said admired King Charles and closely followed royal events. He also complimented the King’s distinctive accent, joking that it might leave members of Congress “envious” ahead of the monarch’s planned address.
The President pointed to a tree planted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1991 as a lasting symbol of the enduring ties between the two nations.
Despite the warm atmosphere, the visit unfolds against a more serious backdrop. Protesters, including individuals connected to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, gathered nearby to call attention to issues involving Prince Andrew. Meanwhile, security remains tight following a recent assassination attempt on President Trump.
Buckingham Palace has confirmed that all scheduled events, including King Charles’ address to a joint session of Congress and an official state dinner, will go ahead as planned under heightened security measures.
