The political rift between Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and Senator Gbenga Daniel, who represents Ogun East, has escalated, with the governor describing the former governor as an “ingrate” despite backing his 2023 senatorial bid.
Tensions between the two leaders have been simmering since APC stakeholders in Ogun East excluded Daniel from a key meeting in Ijebu-Ode and later endorsed Abiodun as the party’s consensus candidate in the district.
Dissatisfied with the development, Daniel moved to reassert his political position by purchasing the APC senatorial nomination form ahead of the 2027 elections, even as Abiodun enjoys the support of party leaders and key political groups.
Speaking at an APC stakeholders’ meeting in Ogun East, Abiodun maintained that he played a major role in facilitating Daniel’s return to the party and supported his emergence as senator.
However, Daniel’s media office swiftly dismissed the governor’s claims, describing them as inaccurate and misleading. In a statement issued on April 29, 2026, the former governor’s camp said it was compelled to respond following repeated requests to clarify comments reportedly made by Abiodun at a private gathering in Iperu.
The statement criticised the governor for making what it called unverified assertions in a closed-door setting, insisting that Daniel’s political relevance in Ogun State is firmly established and not dependent on external support.
The exchange underscores growing divisions within the Ogun State chapter of the APC as both camps position themselves ahead of future political contests.
