Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Tinubu over the worsening security situation in Nigeria following the death of former House of Representatives member, Abba Anas Adamu, in kidnappers’ captivity.

According to reports, the former lawmaker was abducted by bandits along the Abuja Kaduna highway on May 3, 2026, and reportedly died nine days later despite efforts by his family to secure his release.

Reacting to the development through his spokesman, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described the incident as another indication of the deepening insecurity across the country. He stated that the death of a former federal lawmaker in captivity reflects what he called the failure of the current administration to adequately protect lives and property.

The former vice president reportedly said Nigeria was “under siege,” arguing that kidnappings and violent attacks have become widespread across highways, communities, and rural areas. He questioned the safety of ordinary Nigerians if a former member of the National Assembly could be kidnapped and die in captivity on one of the country’s major roads.

Atiku further faulted the Federal Government’s security strategy, insisting that Nigerians deserve decisive action rather than repeated assurances and condolence messages from authorities.

The comments have since generated fresh political debate as insecurity continues to dominate national discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
