Abuja, Nigeria – Sunday, July 13, 2025

Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has died at the age of 82.

The news of his passing was confirmed this morning by the Presidency in a brief statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity. The statement read:

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our former leader, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died peacefully in the early hours of Sunday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, surrounded by family.”

Though the exact cause of death was not immediately disclosed, sources close to the family said the former president had been receiving medical care for age-related health complications in recent months.

Muhammadu Buhari, a retired Major General, was a central figure in Nigerian politics and military history. He first ruled Nigeria as military Head of State between 1983 and 1985 following a coup, and returned as a democratically elected president in 2015 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), serving two terms until 2023.

His presidency was marked by a strong anti-corruption campaign, significant investments in infrastructure, and a controversial approach to security and civil liberties. While praised by some for restoring discipline in governance, he was also criticized by others for alleged human rights violations, economic hardship, and perceived ethnic favoritism.

National and international reactions have begun pouring in as Flags across the country are expected to fly at half-mast, and the Federal Government is expected to announce burial arrangements in line with national honors.

Former President Buhari is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, several children, and grandchildren.
