Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has officially flagged off the rehabilitation of the Aba Regional Water Scheme, a key component of his administration’s drive to provide safe and accessible drinking water to every household across the state.

Speaking during the ceremony held at the premises of St. Joseph’s College, CKC Aba, Governor Otti said the project is part of the broader Abia Integrated Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Accelerated Programme, aimed at restoring and expanding public water infrastructure across urban and rural communities.

“Our vision is to ensure that every household has access to a public water point within two to three minutes walking distance,” Governor Otti said. “This initiative will drastically reduce the time and stress that many—especially children and mothers—spend fetching water from distant sources or private boreholes. Beyond improving water access, it will also enhance sanitation, healthcare, and economic productivity across our communities.”

He added that the revived scheme would play a crucial role in emergency response situations, especially in combating fire outbreaks by providing accessible water for rescue operations.

Reaffirming his commitment to the project, the Governor promised to restore public water supply in Aba, Umuahia, and 57 rural water schemes across the state. He directed security agencies to safeguard all public assets and urged citizens to report any vandalism or sabotage.

During the event, Governor Otti approved the immediate delivery of a refuse bin to St. Joseph’s College and announced plans to establish a Computer-Based Test (CBT) centre in the school with at least 250 computers.

He also commended Mr. Miloslav Mitic of Vena Cava Technologies Nig. Ltd., the contractor handling the project, for his professionalism and dedication.

The flag-off attracted commendations from key stakeholders including Hon. Ucheonye Stephen, member representing Aba Central Constituency, and Ide John Udeagbala, a leader of the Aba private sector, both of whom praised the Governor’s commitment and pledged their continued support.

The Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, and the General Manager of the State Water and Sewage Corporation, Engr. Felix Okonkwo, described the project as a transformative initiative that would significantly improve hygiene, sanitation, and healthcare, especially in schools. They disclosed that the rehabilitation is expected to be completed within six months.

Delivering a goodwill message, the Catholic Bishop of Aba Diocese, Most Rev. Prof. Augustine Echema, lauded the Governor’s leadership, describing the initiative as a “new beginning” for Abia State and a demonstration of the government’s commitment to action over promises.

The event was graced by top government officials including the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, Ph.D; Mayors of Aba South, Aba North, Ukwa East, Osisioma; members of the Labour Party, Abia Arise, the Aba business community, and other stakeholders.
