Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has voiced strong criticism of Nigeria’s current state under President Bola Tinubu, describing the country as being in bondage due to insecurity, economic hardship, and divisive ethnic politics.

Obasanjo made these remarks during a visit by southern leaders of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to his Abeokuta residence as part of their consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections. He lamented that Nigeria remains stuck in a vicious cycle of bad governance that continues to frustrate its citizens, leaving little hope for meaningful change. He stressed that the severity of the situation demands both vigilance and prayer.

Urging Nigerians to stay engaged in national affairs, the former president called for urgent measures to address insecurity and revive the economy. He warned that ethnic politics remains a key obstacle to the nation’s progress and criticized the current political class for lacking genuine nationalist ideals, accusing many leaders of pursuing personal gain over national interest.

Obasanjo further stated that Nigeria has failed not only its citizens but also the expectations of the global community. He emphasized the need for a leader who transcends tribal and regional affiliations, warning that as long as leadership continues to rotate along ethnic lines, the country’s challenges will persist.

“We’ve had Fulani, Hausa, and Yoruba Nigerian presidents, but not a true Nigerian president — someone who represents all citizens, not just their tribe,” he said. “Until that changes, our problems will continue.”
