ADC Slams Tinubu Over Delay in Ambassadorial Appointments, Warns of Diplomatic Fallout

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for failing to appoint ambassadors to Nigeria’s foreign missions, warning that the prolonged delay is harming the country’s international image and weakening diplomatic ties.

In a statement released on Sunday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party expressed deep concern that Nigeria has operated without ambassadors for over two years. It described the situation as “embarrassing” and warned that the diplomatic vacuum could prompt other nations to downgrade their relations with Nigeria.

“Since President Tinubu recalled all 109 ambassadors in 2023, none have been reappointed. As a result, Nigeria lacks representation at key international platforms where vital decisions affecting our national interests are made,” the statement read.

The ADC noted that the absence of ambassadors has worsened visa and consular challenges for Nigerians, particularly in countries like the United States and the United Arab Emirates. It stressed that lower-level diplomats cannot adequately advocate for Nigeria’s interests due to limited access and influence compared to full ambassadors.

The party also criticised the administration’s lack of urgency, warning that Nigeria is increasingly being excluded from important global discussions on trade, investment, and economic cooperation. “While other countries are striking deals and forming partnerships, Nigeria remains missing from the conversation due to its lack of diplomatic leadership abroad,” Abdullahi said.

Additionally, the ADC condemned the government’s handling of a recent diplomatic episode involving a U.S. request for Nigeria to accept deported Venezuelans. While backing Nigeria’s stance on the matter, the party described the foreign minister’s public remarks during a live television broadcast as “reckless and inappropriate,” stressing that such sensitive issues should be managed with discretion.

The ADC concluded by urging President Tinubu to urgently appoint ambassadors to restore Nigeria’s presence on the international stage and prevent further damage to the country’s foreign relations.
