Edo Govt Dismisses Peter Obi’s Political Strength, Says “His Defeat Is a Fixed Deposit”

The Edo State Government has played down the political significance of Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, insisting he poses no real challenge to the All Progressives Congress (APC). According to the state’s Commissioner for Information and Communication, Paul Ohonbamu, Obi lacks a clear plan for governance and should not be taken seriously as a contender for national leadership.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Monday, Ohonbamu stated that Peter Obi remains inconsequential in the political dynamics of Edo State and the country at large. He stressed that the APC is not concerned about Obi’s political aspirations, describing him as vague and unprepared for the responsibilities of presidency.

Ohonbamu criticized Obi’s inability to articulate a concrete agenda for Nigeria, claiming the former Anambra State governor often deflects questions about his plans with vague responses. “Ask him what he will do as president and he’ll say, ‘Let me get there first,’” the commissioner said, highlighting the absence of a detailed policy framework in Obi’s campaign rhetoric.

The commissioner further challenged the perception of Obi’s influence in the South East, arguing that his party, the Labour Party, only controls one state — Abia. In contrast, the APC governs two — Imo and Ebonyi — while the remaining are under the control of the PDP and APGA, undermining any claims of regional dominance.

Concluding his remarks, Ohonbamu dismissed Obi’s presidential bid as an exercise in futility. “Peter Obi is the least of our worries,” he reiterated, adding that Obi is “struggling in error” and that “his defeat is a fixed deposit,” a metaphor implying an outcome that is certain and unchangeable.
