FG Moves to End Fish Importation, Boost Local Production

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has unveiled plans to significantly reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported fish by revitalizing local production through comprehensive reforms in the aquaculture and fisheries sector.

Speaking during a stakeholder meeting with fisheries cooperative groups in Abuja, Oyetola emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to transforming the sector into a major contributor to food security, employment, and export growth. The meeting was convened with representatives from key industry bodies including the Fisheries Cooperative Federation of Nigeria (FCFN), Tilapia Aquaculture Developers Association of Nigeria (TADAN), Catfish Farmers Association of Nigeria (CAFAN), Women in Fish Farming and Aquaculture, and the Practicing Farmers Association of Nigeria.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Dr. Bolaji Akinola, Oyetola said: “Nigeria must chart a new path toward fish self-sufficiency. We are determined to increase domestic production, reduce imports, and ensure sustainable development in the sector.”

He noted that the Ministry will support the fisheries and aquaculture subsector with policies, technical assistance, and financial inclusion. Special attention, he said, will be given to empowering women and youth through start-up grants and other support initiatives.

“Increasing youth involvement in aquaculture is key not only for food production but also as a tool for reducing unemployment. We will ensure women and young people are fully integrated into this transformation process,” he added.

In his welcome remarks, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olufemi Oloruntola, reaffirmed that the meeting aligned with promises made during the Ministry’s second-quarter citizens and stakeholders engagement in Lagos on July 3. He emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to forging lasting partnerships with cooperative societies to promote inclusive sectoral growth.
