Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has appointed Mr. Joachim Achor, an indigene of Abia State, as the new Accountant General of Anambra State. The appointment marks a historic shift from the state’s longstanding practice of reserving top government roles exclusively for indigenes.

Achor’s journey in Anambra began when he came to the state as a student seeking academic opportunities. After graduating from the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, he served his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year in the state, where he distinguished himself as the best corps member, earning the NYSC State Merit Award. Impressed by his exceptional performance, the then-military government offered him automatic employment in the civil service. Over the years, he rose steadily through the ranks, serving as Director, Permanent Secretary, and now, Accountant General.

Governor Soludo’s Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, highlighted that this appointment, alongside that of Mr. Adebayo Ojeyinka from Osun State as a Permanent Secretary, reflects Soludo’s commitment to a diverse, competence-driven, and merit-based bureaucracy.

“These appointments were not influenced by politics but were outcomes of a rigorous, transparent process, including computer-based examinations, merit screening, and final interactions with the governor,” Aburime explained.

He further emphasized that Soludo’s decision represents a strategic departure from the historical reliance on political patronage, ethnic favoritism, or gubernatorial discretion. “This groundbreaking move demonstrates Anambra’s openness, progressiveness, and cosmopolitan spirit. It shows that Anambra belongs to all Nigerians willing to serve with excellence,” Aburime added.

In his response, Achor expressed deep gratitude to Governor Soludo and the people of Anambra, describing the opportunity as “deeply humbling.” He commended the governor for prioritizing merit and national unity above ethnic considerations.

“I am profoundly thankful to Governor Soludo, a true nationalist who values competence above origin. Serving this state has been a great honor, and I give glory to God for the grace to reach this point,” Achor said.
