Super Falcons Bag $1m for WAFCON Triumph as Ajibade Named MVP

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will walk away with a $1 million prize after clinching the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title with a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over hosts Morocco in the final.

Trailing 2-0 in the first half, the Falcons rallied with goals from Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, and a dramatic late winner from Joe Echegini to seal their 10th WAFCON crown.

Their prize comes as part of a 100 percent increase in the competition’s reward for winners, with CAF raising the tournament’s overall prize pool to $3.475 million ahead of the 2024 edition.

In addition to lifting the trophy, the Super Falcons dominated individual awards. Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was awarded Best Goalkeeper, and Justine Madugu was recognized as Coach of the Tournament.

Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak claimed the Golden Boot with five goals, while South Africa earned the Fair Play Award for their exemplary sportsmanship.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, congratulated the team on their achievement, praising their determination and excellence.
