Lawmakers from the Abia State House of Assembly on Wednesday undertook an on-the-spot assessment of several erosion sites in Ohafia North, with a firm assurance that the government will act swiftly to address the menace.

The inspection followed a motion of urgent public importance raised by Hon. Egwuruonu Ochuru Obasi, who represents Ohafia North State Constituency in the Assembly.

Speaking during the visit, Okoh Johnson Ukiwo, Councillor representing Amogugu Ward in the Ohafia Legislative Council, appealed to the state government to urgently intervene in the erosion threatening Agbor Community.

Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, Urban Renewal and New-Map, Hon. Nwoke Kalu Mbam, described the gully erosion behind the residence of the late Chief Abbott in Abiriba as a “death trap.” He stressed the need for immediate palliative measures by the state government to prevent further deterioration and called on the federal government and relevant environmental agencies to support the effort.

Hon. Egwuruonu Ochuru Obasi expressed gratitude to the leadership and members of the 8th Abia Assembly for their prompt response to his motion. He expressed confidence that Governor Alex Otti will extend his administration’s infrastructural efforts to the erosion-ravaged communities.

The lawmakers inspected four major erosion sites: Abiriba Amurie–Nkporo Road, Iyiuda Erosion Site along Obufia–Nkporo Road, the site behind the late Chief Abbott’s House in Abiriba, and Agbor Community Road.

Other members of the inspection team included Hon. Lucky Nweke Johnson (Isuikwuato), Hon. Nnamdi Chimdi Ibekwe (Bende North), Committee Secretary Mr. Amaka Ukwu, Assistant Secretary Mrs. Jennifer Chukwudi, and key stakeholders from Nkporo and Abiriba communities.
