The Federal Government is set to launch a nationwide homeownership and housing development campaign in collaboration with state governments, private developers, and development partners. The initiative, aimed at closing policy implementation gaps across Nigeria, was announced by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, at the opening of the 19th Africa International Housing Show (AIHS) in Abuja.

Dangiwa emphasized that the campaign forms part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, designed to tackle Nigeria’s housing deficit through inclusive and innovative reforms.

“We will embed Housing Reform Champions in state governments, convene State Housing Roundtables, and provide technical support to structure viable housing projects and unlock financing opportunities,” the Minister stated.

Speaking to a diverse audience comprising government officials, diplomats, financial institutions, and housing professionals from across Africa and beyond, Dangiwa noted that affordability remains the greatest barrier to homeownership across the continent.

“Despite increasing housing supply, millions still can’t afford decent homes. Our approach goes beyond construction – we are addressing the foundational economic issues that make housing inaccessible for many Nigerians,” he said.

He detailed the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Housing Programme, which includes Renewed Hope Cities, Estates, and Social Housing Estates, as a comprehensive framework to deliver affordable housing nationwide.

So far, the government has attracted over ₦70 billion in private investment through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to support large-scale urban housing projects.

Dangiwa also highlighted recent efforts by the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), such as the Rent-to-Own Scheme and Rental Assistance Product, tailored to assist urban workers and young families. Additionally, the soon-to-be-launched MOFI Real Estate Investment Fund (MREIF) aims to boost access to long-term, low-cost mortgage loans.

Reaffirming the ministry’s commitment to urban renewal and slum upgrades, Dangiwa said the government’s approach aligns with the UN-Habitat Global Action Plan and the Addis Declaration on Inclusive Urban Development.

He urged donor agencies, development finance institutions, and private sector stakeholders to partner with the government in turning the ideas shared at AIHS into concrete outcomes for Nigerians.

“Housing is not a privilege – it is a right,” Dangiwa said. “Investing in housing means investing in people, in jobs, in cities, and in the future of our nation.”
