Staff unions at Lagos State University (LASU) have embarked on an indefinite strike following unresolved grievances with the institution’s management. The industrial action, which took effect on Thursday, July 31, 2025, was jointly declared by the university’s major unions under the Joint Action Committee (JAC). This includes the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

In a formal notice addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, and signed by union leaders — ASUU-LASU Chairman Prof. Ibrahim A. Bakare and Secretary Dr. Sylvester O. Idowu; as well as SSANU-LASU Chairman Oluwaseyi Lawal and Secretary Waheed Majekodunmi — the unions directed all staff members to immediately cease work and vacate their duty posts across all LASU campuses, including the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) in Ikeja and the Epe campus.

The statement reads in part:
“Following the resolution at the Emergency Congress of the Joint Action Committee of LASU staff unions, an indefinite strike action has commenced from Thursday, July 31, 2025. This strike will continue until all staff demands are satisfactorily addressed by the relevant authorities.”

The strike action comes at a critical time, as students of the university were scheduled to begin their second semester examinations for the 2024/2025 academic session on Monday.
