2027 Presidency: Niger Delta Leader Urges North to Back Southern Continuity Until 2031

A prominent voice from the Niger Delta, Dr. Ken Robinson, has urged political leaders and interest groups from Northern Nigeria to put aside their ambitions for the 2027 presidential election and instead support the continuation of power in the South until 2031.

Dr. Robinson, former National Publicity Secretary of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) and Convener of Concerned Citizens of Rivers, made the appeal in a statement released on Sunday. He described the reported northern push to reclaim the presidency in 2027 as “unfortunate, unpatriotic, and reckless.”

He argued that the North’s return to power so soon after holding the presidency from 2015 to 2023 runs counter to the principles of fairness, equity, and justice—values he said are essential for Nigeria’s unity and long-term development.

“While every Nigerian has the constitutional right to seek the presidency, such aspirations must be guided by a commitment to fairness and national cohesion,” Dr. Robinson stated. “It is difficult to justify any northern ambition for 2027, given the informal zoning arrangement that has played a crucial role in maintaining balance in our political system.”

He called on Northern elites to redirect their focus towards fostering inclusivity and national stability. “The presidency is not the birthright of any region,” he emphasized. “Nigeria’s political leaders must rise above narrow interests and prioritize the unity and peace of the nation.”

Dr. Robinson maintained that rotational leadership has been a key stabilizing mechanism in Nigeria’s diverse and pluralistic society. He warned that abandoning this practice could lead to political unrest and jeopardize economic progress.

“Disregarding the principle of power rotation at this juncture could have serious consequences for Nigeria’s stability. We must preserve the spirit of equity and justice if we hope to move forward as a united country,” he concluded.
