Storm Floris Set to Disrupt Travel Across UK as Weather Warnings Issued

The UK is bracing for severe travel disruption as Storm Floris sweeps in on Monday, with the Met Office issuing amber and yellow weather warnings across the country.

An amber alert will be in force for most of Scotland from 10:00 to 22:00 BST, warning of potential “danger to life” due to high winds and coastal damage. A wider yellow warning, covering northern England, north Wales, Northern Ireland, and all of Scotland, including Orkney and Shetland, will last from 06:00 to midnight.

Winds are expected to reach 40-50mph inland, with exposed coastal and highland areas seeing gusts of 60-70mph. The storm may cause damage to buildings, trees, and coastlines, and affect power lines and travel infrastructure.

Rail operators LNER and Avanti West Coast have urged passengers to avoid travelling north of Newcastle and Preston respectively. Network Rail has announced that several Scottish routes will be closed from midday, while others will operate on a reduced timetable.

Scottish ferry operator CalMac has already cancelled multiple sailings, warning of widespread disruption along the west coast.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution, especially in Highland and coastal areas. The RAC’s Rod Dennis urged holidaymakers towing caravans or carrying roof boxes to ensure their loads are secure.

Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop acknowledged the storm’s unusual timing in August and called for increased public awareness. “Our message is clear: plan ahead, check your journey, and don’t take unnecessary risks,” she said.

Storm Floris is the sixth named storm of the 2024/25 season and the first since January. Although uncommon in summer, named storms in August are not unprecedented. In recent years, Storms Lilian, Antoni, Betty, Ellen, and Francis all brought significant weather events during the month.

The storm follows the UK’s fifth warmest July on record. Provisional data from the Met Office showed all four UK nations recorded one of their ten warmest Julys, continuing a six-month trend of above-average temperatures.

Travel disruptions are expected to persist into Tuesday. Passengers are advised to check with their transport providers and monitor weather updates closely.
