No fewer than 250 babies are delivered monthly at Obio Cottage Hospital in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, with an estimated 14,000 births recorded annually, according to Dr. Akinwunmi Fajola, Health Manager at Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited.

Speaking to journalists on Monday, Fajola revealed that the hospital, established in 2010 through a partnership between Renaissance Energy, its Joint Venture partners, and the Rivers State Government, was designed to provide affordable healthcare to low-income communities.

Operated under the Community Health Insurance Scheme (CHIS), the facility offers maternal, neonatal, child, primary, and general medical care at subsidized rates.

“Through CHIS, Obio Cottage Hospital has expanded significantly, serving over 400,000 beneficiaries—the highest number in the Niger Delta region,” Fajola said. “We record an average of 250 deliveries per month and about 14,000 yearly.”

He also highlighted the hospital’s recent adoption of an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system to improve efficiency and patient care. Additionally, the facility has achieved a 99% success rate in preventing mother-to-child HIV transmission.

“Nearly all babies born to HIV-positive mothers at our hospital are HIV-free, thanks to our effective interventions,” Fajola noted.

He commended the Rivers State Government, the hospital’s partners, and staff for their dedication to delivering quality healthcare services.
