Eersterust Residents Demand Justice After Woman’s Body Found in Shallow Grave

Tensions are high in Eersterust, east of Pretoria, as outraged residents demand justice following the gruesome discovery of a woman’s partially burnt body buried in a shallow grave.

Protesters gathered outside the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where a 36-year-old suspect was due to appear in connection with the murder. He was arrested on Monday in Polokwane.

The woman, whose identity has not yet been made public, was reported missing several weeks ago. Her body was discovered on July 31, adding to growing concerns over a string of gender-based violence (GBV) cases in the area. At least four women have reportedly been murdered in Eersterust in recent weeks.

Moshe Mathe, a representative from the Youth for Survival NPO, said the community was heartbroken and tired of the ongoing violence against women.

“There is darkness in our country. It is Women’s Month, yet women are being killed,” he said, addressing protesters holding candles in memory of the victims. “Let there be light in South Africa. Let justice prevail. Perpetrators must be locked away and never return. Women are living in fear, even those in shelters are afraid to go home. What kind of life is this?”

The recent spate of femicides has intensified calls for stronger action against GBV and better protection for vulnerable women across the country.
