The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has attributed Nigeria’s deepening economic crisis to widespread corruption, rising criminality, and what he described as incompetent leadership under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In a post shared via his official X handle on Monday, Obi lamented that millions of Nigerians are slipping further into poverty due to poor governance and a lack of prioritization of citizens’ welfare.

Quoting data from the United Nations, Obi highlighted that about 34 million Nigerians are projected to experience acute food insecurity, while 133 million—roughly 63% of the population—are already living in multidimensional poverty. He further noted that inflation, currently nearing 30%, along with high unemployment and economic mismanagement, has wiped out the country’s middle class.

Obi pointed to Argentina as a case study for possible recovery, noting that despite facing severe economic challenges—with inflation above 200% and over half the population in poverty as of early 2024—the country saw notable improvements under new leadership. According to him, in just two years, Argentina reduced its poverty rate to 38.1%, extreme poverty to 8.2%, and monthly inflation to around 2–3%.

He emphasized that while two years may not be enough for a complete transformation, it is sufficient to initiate meaningful reforms—if driven by sincerity, discipline, and focused governance.

Obi insisted that Nigeria can overcome its challenges and restore dignity to its people if leaders demonstrate a strong commitment to fighting corruption, reducing the cost of governance, and investing in key sectors like education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation.
