The Federal Government has announced the withdrawal of the case against Ms. Comfort Emmanson, who was involved in an altercation aboard an Ibom Air flight, and has pardoned Fuji music icon Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, following recent controversies over unruly behaviour at Nigerian airports.
In a statement issued by the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, SAN, today August 13th 2025 the decision followed consultations with key aviation stakeholders and consideration of appeals from well-meaning Nigerians, as well as expressions of remorse from those involved.
Comfort Emmanson’s Case
Keyamo disclosed that Ibom Air had agreed to withdraw its complaint against Ms. Emmanson, who had shown “great remorse” during police questioning in the presence of her lawyer. Following the withdrawal, the Airport Police Command will facilitate her release from Kirikiri Prisons within the week.
The Minister also revealed that the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) had agreed to lift the lifetime flying ban previously imposed on her, with full details to be announced soon.
KWAM 1’s Case
On the case involving KWAM 1 and ValueJet, the Minister stated that the NCAA had reduced his flight ban to one month and would also withdraw its criminal complaint against him. The music star is to be engaged as an ambassador for airport security protocol by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
ValueJet pilots involved in the incident, Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba, will have their licenses restored after serving a one-month suspension and undergoing mandatory professional reappraisal.
Sector Reforms
The Minister directed all aviation security agencies to commence a retreat next week aimed at retraining personnel on handling unruly passengers and de-escalating conflicts. Airlines will also hold sessions to address staff conduct towards travellers.
Keyamo stressed that the clemency granted was based solely on compassionate grounds, warning that the government remains committed to strict enforcement of aviation safety and security rules going forward.
