President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Japan for the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), taking place from August 20 to 22 in Yokohama.

His aircraft landed at the Presidential Wing of Haneda International Airport, Tokyo, at 12:50 a.m. local time on Tuesday (still Monday in Nigeria due to the eight-hour time difference). He was received by Ambassador Hideo Matsubara, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar, and officials of the Nigerian Embassy.

Tinubu, who departed Abuja on August 15 with senior government officials, made a brief stopover in Dubai before heading to Japan.

According to Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the President will attend plenary sessions, hold bilateral meetings, and engage with Japanese business leaders with investments in Nigeria.

Themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa”, TICAD9 will spotlight Africa’s economic transformation, private investment, institutional reforms, and sustainable development for peace and human security.

The triennial forum, initiated by the Japanese government, is co-hosted by the United Nations, UNDP, the African Union Commission, and the World Bank. It alternates between Japan and Africa, with the last edition held in Tunisia in 2022.

After TICAD9, Tinubu is scheduled to embark on a two-day state visit to Brazil from August 24 to 25, at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, where he will hold bilateral talks and attend a business forum with Brazilian investors.
