The Anambra State House of Assembly has summoned Bernard Udemezue, member representing Ayamelum Constituency, over social media posts alleging that his constituency was excluded from constituency allowances.

During plenary, lawmakers described Udemezue’s posts as “damaging” and a threat to the image and safety of members.

Udemezue, elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had accused the Assembly of sidelining Ayamelum in the sharing of allowances.

Raising a motion of urgent public importance, Tony Muobike, representing Aguata 2 Constituency, said the posts were malicious and tarnished the House’s reputation.

“Most of the comments threaten the safety of members of this Eighth Assembly. It is a serious situation that should be investigated to prevent escalation,” Muobike said.

The motion was seconded by Chief Whip Jude Ngobili (Ihiala 1) and supported by other members, including Emma Nwafor (Orumba South) and Deputy Majority Leader Nobel Igwe (Ogbaru 1). They cited Order Seven of the House Standing Orders, which prohibits abuse of legislative privilege.

Lawmakers warned that Udemezue’s remarks could incite public unrest and endanger colleagues’ lives.

Speaker Somtochukwu Udeze referred the matter to the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics and Privileges, directing it to submit its report next Tuesday.
