EFCC, FRSC Partner to Prosecute Truck Owners Over Road Accidents

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are set to collaborate in prosecuting truck owners whose vehicles cause fatal road accidents.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Mohammed, who praised Olukoyede’s anti-corruption drive, said accidents remain a leading cause of death in Nigeria, with about 6,000 fatalities recorded annually. He argued that reckless truck operations should be treated as economic crimes due to their devastating social and financial impact.

“We need to collaborate and declare the owners of such trucks wanted and charge them for economic crime. If we create safety values, we will reduce the cost of security,” the Corps Marshal said.

Responding, Olukoyede assured the FRSC of EFCC’s support, noting that road safety and anti-corruption efforts both align with the Commission’s broader mandate to protect Nigerians.

“Our mandates are similar. We don’t only fight financial crimes but also economic sabotage. If a truck meant for goods is used for passengers and causes accidents, lives and property are lost,” he said, promising to work toward a memorandum of understanding to strengthen collaboration.
