Mutfwang Commissions Bukuru Market, Pledges Legacy of Empowerment in Plateau

Jos — Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has reaffirmed his commitment to leaving behind a legacy of empowerment and economic resilience, with a special focus on women and youth.

The Governor gave the assurance on Wednesday while commissioning the newly built Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) Market in Bukuru, Jos South Local Government Area.

Describing the project as a milestone in his administration’s economic agenda, Mutfwang said the market was designed to restore dignity to traders, particularly displaced women who have endured years of hardship in search of decent trading spaces.

“This market is dear to my heart because it opens doors for economic empowerment. Our mothers are the economic pillars of their families, and we want to prioritize them in the allocation of shops here,” he stated.

Constructed within a year, the facility features 165 shops, 133 lock-up shops, 116 stalls, 15 kiosks, 16 warehouses, a motor park, and open spaces for more than 2,000 traders. Requests from trader associations for office spaces have also been approved.

Mutfwang commended JMDB General Manager, Hart Bankat, and his team for delivering the project on time and announced that more neighborhood markets will be developed across Plateau, including in Kugiya, Jos Main Market, Mararaban Jama’a, Shendam, Mangu, and Bassa.

He stressed that the initiative is in line with the Greater Jos Master Plan, aimed at transforming the capital into a modern, livable city.

“What is a legacy if it doesn’t leave an imprint in the hearts of the people? We want to be remembered for building a legacy of empowerment, development, and economic resilience,” Mutfwang said.

Bankat, in his remarks, lauded the Governor’s support under the Time Is Now agenda and disclosed that land has already been secured for Phase Two of the project.

Declaring the market open, Mutfwang urged traders to protect and maximize the facility, saying: “A prosperous Plateau is a peaceful Plateau. This is your market—own it, protect it, and let it transform your lives.”
