AGF Fagbemi Calls for Tech-Driven Overhaul of Nigeria’s Justice System

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has declared that the future of Nigeria’s legal system depends on its bold integration of technology and innovation to ensure effectiveness, transparency, and accessibility.

Fagbemi made the statement on Wednesday in Maiduguri while opening the 2025 Justice Sector Leadership Retreat. He urged justice sector leaders to champion this change, stating that technology offers tools like digital case management, AI for legal research, and online services to reduce backlogs and streamline procedures.

He cautioned, however, that technology alone is not a silver bullet. “It must be embedded within a coordinated reform agenda that breaks silos between institutions,” he stated, emphasizing the need for broader structural reforms and collaboration.

The AGF assured that the Federal Ministry of Justice would enhance budgetary support to modernize infrastructure and drive these essential reforms.

Earlier, the Solicitor General of the Federation, Beatrice Jedy-Agba, welcomed participants and commended the Borno State Governor for hosting the event. She stressed that the retreat’s theme was critical for shaping a modern justice system and urged for practical, actionable outcomes to make the system more responsive and equitable for all Nigerians.
