The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed two Chinese supermarkets and eight cosmetics shops in Abuja for selling unregistered and harmful products.

The enforcement operation, led by Mr. Musa Embugushiki on the directive of NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, targeted two supermarkets in Jabi District and outlets at Wuse Market, where products worth over ₦170 million were confiscated.

The supermarkets, located on Mike Akhigbe Way and Ebitu Ukiwe Street, were shut down after surveillance confirmed they sold food items labeled exclusively in Chinese, in violation of NAFDAC’s English labeling policy. One operator denied the allegations, but inspectors found the outlet fully stocked with unregistered goods.

Similarly, eight cosmetics shops in Wuse Market were closed for selling expired, banned, and unregistered cosmetics, aphrodisiacs, and body enhancement products. Seized items included Wenicks Capsules, Maxman Capsules, Skin Whitening Gummies, breast enlargement products, and other unsafe items often marketed by unqualified individuals posing as dermatologists and pharmacists.

Prof. Adeyeye warned that such products expose consumers to risks including skin cancer, kidney damage, and neurological problems. She reiterated NAFDAC’s commitment to safeguarding public health while urging Nigerians to patronize only registered products and report suspicious outlets.

“NAFDAC welcomes legitimate business,” she stressed, “but will not tolerate the sale of unregistered or toxic products in Nigeria.”
