WhatsApp to Introduce Usernames, Reducing Need for Phone Numbers

WhatsApp is testing a new feature that will allow users to connect through unique usernames instead of phone numbers, marking a major shift toward greater privacy and security on the platform.

According to reports, the update  currently in WhatsApp’s beta testing programme will enable users to chat, join groups, and engage in business conversations using usernames. This aims to give users more control over their privacy, especially in large groups where sharing phone numbers can be uncomfortable.

Leaked screenshots show a new “Username” field in user profiles, allowing individuals to choose distinctive handles and hide their numbers if they prefer. The feature mirrors systems already used on platforms such as Telegram, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).

While the change could make WhatsApp function more like a social network, experts warn of potential risks such as username impersonation and squatting. To counter this, WhatsApp is reportedly developing verification tools to ensure authenticity.

With over two billion active users worldwide, the username feature once officially launched could redefine how people connect on WhatsApp, shifting the focus from phone numbers to personal identities.
