Abia State is on the brink of a major transportation milestone as the first batch of government-owned electric buses was  scheduled to arrive on Sunday November 23, 2025. This development officially makes Abia the first state in Nigeria to deploy electric buses for public use, thanks to a strategic partnership between the state government and the Coscharis Group, led by Dr. Cosmos Maduka.

The initial fleet consists of twenty specially designed, 40-seater electric buses currently en route from Lagos, where they were unveiled in Apapa after arriving from China. Built for commercial operations, these buses mark a significant advancement in Governor Alex Otti’s drive to modernize the state’s transportation system.

Each bus boasts a 300-kilometre single-charge range and comes equipped with modern features including internal and rear cameras, mobile charging ports, disability-accessible entry, emergency exits, and dual fire-extinguisher safety points.

To support smooth operations, Coscharis is partnering with the state to set up a solar-powered charging hub, ensuring the buses run daily without relying on public electricity. This first batch will be followed by another set of 20 buses already in production, with more batches planned.

With this rollout, Abia positions itself as a leader in clean mobility, safe mass transit, and tourism-friendly infrastructure, underlining Governor Otti’s commitment to raising the standard of public transportation in Nigeria. The buses are expected to be officially received in the state before the end of today.
