The Federal Government has introduced a nationwide digital learning programme to address the acute shortage of more than 1.2 million teachers across primary and secondary schools in Nigeria.
The initiative, known as Inspire Live(s)! Online Real-Time Classes, aims to widen access to quality education by streaming live, interactive lessons to pupils regardless of location or learning environment.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, said the platform is designed to ensure continuous learning and bridge teacher gaps using technology. She noted that the programme guarantees inclusion and allows children from underserved communities to learn at the same pace as others.
Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa, confirmed that implementation has begun and will eventually cover Primary 1 to Senior Secondary School 3. While secondary school classes are already active, the rollout for primary schools is still pending.
According to the ministry, the programme is open to both public and private schools nationwide, with live classes currently running for JSS 1, JSS 2, and SS 2 from Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Subjects available for Junior Secondary include Mathematics, English, Basic Science, ICT, Agricultural Science, Basic Technology, Civic Education, French, Physical Education, Religious Studies, History, and Business Studies.
Senior Secondary subjects offered include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, Mathematics, Economics, Geography, Agricultural Science, Civic Education, Technical Drawing/Catering Craft, and Automobile Mechanics.
Boriowo added that lessons are delivered by certified master teachers through Cisco Webex, and state commissioners have been directed to appoint focal officers to coordinate the programme. Schools are also expected to provide basic ICT facilities, internet connection, and complete student registration through authorised Inspire channels.
