The abduction of more than 300 schoolchildren in Nigeria has drawn strong reactions from European authorities, who say the incident shows that Islamic militants continue to operate with little restraint. Armed men attacked St Mary’s School in Papiri, Niger State, taking away hundreds of students and teachers in one of the country’s largest mass kidnappings in recent years.

The victims included both boys and girls, many of them teenagers. While dozens of the abducted students have escaped and reunited with their families, hundreds are still missing. Although no group has claimed responsibility, security analysts believe the attack aligns with the methods of criminal armed groups that frequently target schools for ransom.

International bodies have condemned the abduction, stressing that learning environments must be protected and free from violence. The incident has intensified calls for the Nigerian government to bolster security in vulnerable communities and ensure that those behind the attack are held accountable.
