A 47-year-old man, Kayode Adeniyi, has appeared before a High Court in Sagamu, Ogun State, over allegations of manslaughter and reckless driving following a fatal accident involving British-Nigerian boxer, Anthony Joshua.

Adeniyi, who was driving Joshua and his friends at the time of the crash, was earlier detained and questioned at the Eleweran Police Station. After giving his account of the incident, he was charged to court on counts bordering on reckless driving and causing death.

Confirming the development, a police source told The Guardian: “He is currently in court; more details will be made available soon.”

However, Menzie Abia has criticised the arrest, insisting that the driver should not be blamed for the tragedy. According to him, Adeniyi has served as Joshua’s Nigerian driver for years and would not have retained his job if he were reckless.

He condemned the government for what he described as infrastructural negligence, citing lack of proper road shoulders, traffic signs, speed limit signs, hazard warnings, and poor highway safety measures.

“A truck was left parked on the highway and that alone is a major traffic hazard. Instead of addressing its failure, the government is trying to use the driver as a scapegoat,” he said.

Anthony Joshua, a two-time world heavyweight champion, was discharged from a hospital after sustaining minor injuries in the December 29, 2025 crash, which occurred in Makun. The accident claimed the lives of his personal trainer and a close friend when their vehicle collided with a stationary truck.

Joshua is expected to take time off boxing as he recovers physically and mourns the deceased. The bodies of the two victims, identified as Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, are expected to be released to their families for burial.

The tragic incident happened shortly after Joshua and his friends had spent time playing tennis.
