The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has sounded the alarm over the misuse of Nigeria’s Cybercrime law, warning that it is increasingly being exploited to suppress free speech and target critics of public officials.

According to Osigwe, the legislation, initially designed to tackle cyber fraud and online criminal activities, is now being applied in ways that threaten the rights of journalists, activists, and ordinary citizens who voice dissenting opinions.

He expressed concern that some judicial officers are under pressure to make rulings that favor influential individuals, including denying bail in cases where it would normally be granted. This, he warned, undermines public confidence in the justice system and weakens democratic freedoms.

Osigwe urged authorities to ensure that laws are applied fairly and transparently, stressing that the judiciary must remain independent and impartial to protect citizens’ rights and maintain public trust.
