Traders in Lagos have appealed to the federal and state governments for urgent support following a massive fire that destroyed several stalls and goods at Balogun Market. The incident has left many business owners struggling to recover their livelihoods.

The Ndigboamaka Progressive Markets Association (NPMA), which represents dozens of markets across Lagos, described the fire as a “major setback” for traders who have lost merchandise and capital. NPMA President Comrade Chinedu Ukatu urged authorities to provide financial relief and essential materials to help affected traders rebuild their businesses.

Beyond compensation, the association stressed the importance of safety improvements in markets to prevent similar disasters in the future. NPMA pledged to work with government agencies on fire prevention measures, advocating for better emergency response systems and infrastructure upgrades.

With many traders still unable to operate, the group warned that immediate action is critical to avoid prolonged economic hardship for families and workers who depend on market activities for their daily income.
