Traders Raise Alarm Over Onitsha Market Demolition

The demolition of unapproved structures at the Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State has sparked outrage among traders, many of whom say the action threatens their livelihoods. The operation, led by the local government, is intended to clear parts of the market, restore its original layout, and reduce congestion.

Affected vendors expressed frustration and concern as walls and shops were torn down, warning that the move could significantly disrupt economic activity in one of the region’s busiest markets. Some traders said they had little time to remove their goods before the demolition began, resulting in losses.

Officials defended the exercise, emphasizing that removing illegal structures is necessary to improve order and accessibility within the market. They noted that traders had been given prior notice and were urged to move their belongings before the enforcement date.

The action has also prompted calls from traders and community leaders for alternative solutions, such as relocating vendors or providing temporary facilities, to allow businesses to continue operating while improvements are carried out.
