NetNaija CEO Detained Over Alleged Movie and Music Piracy

Emmanuel Analike, founder and CEO of NetNaija, has been detained at Kuje Correctional Centre following his arraignment in Abuja on allegations of distributing pirated movies and music online.

The Federal High Court heard that Analike allegedly produced, possessed, and shared copyrighted works without authorization. The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), which brought the charges, said the offenses involved both local and international films and sound recordings. Analike pleaded not guilty to all counts.

Justice Suleiman Liman directed that Analike remain in custody pending the court’s decision on his bail application, which is scheduled for March 9. His lawyer, Nnemeka Ejiofor, told the court that a formal bail request had been filed, supported by detailed affidavits and written submissions.

Representing the NCC, Gladys Isaac-Ojo said the arraignment was a significant milestone in the fight against online piracy. She emphasized that while Analike has the right to seek bail, the decision lies entirely with the court, after which trial proceedings will continue.
