ABUJA, NIGERIA – Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, is expected to step down from his position today as he prepares to contest the Bauchi State governorship election, marking a notable development in the country’s political landscape ahead of the next polls.

According to reports, Tuggar’s resignation comes as he moves to fully commit to his gubernatorial ambition. His exit is seen as part of a broader political realignment, with attention now shifting to the emerging contest for leadership in Bauchi State.

During his time in office, Tuggar was credited with efforts aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic standing globally. Initiatives such as the Regional Partnership for Democracy were highlighted as part of measures that enhanced Nigeria’s role in international engagement and cooperation.

The ministry also played a key role in coordinating the evacuation of Nigerian citizens from conflict-affected regions, working alongside the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission to ensure timely responses to crises involving nationals abroad.

Tuggar’s decision stands out at a time when several serving ministers are reportedly reluctant to leave their appointments to pursue elective offices. His move places him among a smaller group opting to resign early and focus entirely on campaign activities.

He served for approximately two and a half years at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a period marked by the absence of appointed ambassadors for an extended duration. Despite these challenges, he is said to have maintained key bilateral relations and contributed to shaping Nigeria’s foreign policy direction through the administration’s “4Ds Agenda.”

His anticipated resignation is expected to formally open up the political field for the Bauchi governorship race, with analysts and observers watching closely to see how his experience in diplomacy may influence his prospects in domestic politics.
