The Nigeria Union of Journalists has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to publicly withdraw controversial remarks directed at a television anchor, warning that such statements could endanger press freedom in the country.

The union expressed concern over comments allegedly made by the minister about Seun Okinbaloye of Channels Television, describing them as inappropriate and capable of inciting hostility against media professionals.

In a statement released by its national leadership, the NUJ noted that it had initially exercised restraint, anticipating that the minister would clarify or retract his words. However, the absence of any response prompted the union to speak out, emphasizing the need for accountability from public office holders.

The body stressed that journalists must be allowed to carry out their duties without intimidation or fear, adding that comments perceived as threats could undermine democratic values and public trust.

It further urged government officials to engage constructively with the media, highlighting the role of a free press in ensuring transparency and good governance. The NUJ warned that failure to address the situation could strain relations between the media and public institutions.
